Although I’ll be out of state beginning tomorrow to cover all of the Kentucky action at AMERICANAFEST in Nashville, I couldn’t resist putting together a live menu for my home state music fans remaining here who I know will be looking to scratch their musical itch this week.

Even with so much going on in Music City there’s still a stacked lineup of shows to look forward to in the Commonwealth this weekend, from album release shows to the return of homebred, Hall of Fame worthy acts.

Get the scoop on it all below…

Live Menu Sept. 8-14

SUSTO

When: Sept. 10 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Burl — 375 Thompson Rd, Lexington

Online: TheBurlKy.com

Soulful southern rockers SUSTO will return to The Burl, where I first saw them as support for American Aquarium in 2018, on Wednesday for a full band show. While I’m bummed that the gig isn’t a part of the acoustic string band leg of the group’s current tour to promote it’s similar sounding new record I am simply grateful to see the group coming through Central Kentucky again.

For nearly a decade I’ve been a fan of the band through songs like “Far Out Feeling,” “Cosmic Cowboy,” “Homeboy,” “Manual Transmission” and “Friends, Lovers, Ex-Lovers: Whatever.” No matter if it’s with their original rock band arrangements or a string band setup, SUSTO’s songs are genuine and speak to the heart of the human condition in a way that we need more of, both on an individual and societal level, right now.

Erin Viancourt, Andrew Hibbard

When: Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.

Where: The Southgate House — 111 E Sixth St, Newport

Online: SouthgateHouse.com

Ever since I saw her at the Southgate House opening for Mike & The Moonpies (now Silverada) a few years ago I’ve been hooked on the music of Cleveland born singer Erin Viancourt. She’ll be returning to the Newport venue on Thursday alongside another regular performer at the repurposed church in Andy Hibbard, a voice that reminds me of a cross between Grayson Jenkins and Woody Guthrie who just released a new album — The Alamo — in June.

Jason Carter Band

When: Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. (CT)

Where: Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame — 311 W 2nd St, Owensboro

Online: BluegrassHall.org

Ashland born fiddler Jason Carter will bring his all-star string band to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum’s Woodward Theatre in Owensboro for what’s sure to be a barn burner on Thursday as he runs through everything from bluegrass standards to McCoury classics and everything in between.

Nicholas Jamerson, Emily Jamerson

When: Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. (CT)

Where: The Grove — 702 Happy Valley Rd, Glasgow

Online: TheGroveGlasgow.com

It’ll be a family affair on Saturday in Glasgow when Nicholas Jamerson & The Morning Jays celebrate the release of its album The Narrow Way with support from Nicholas’ sister, Emily Jamerson. The celebration comes amid a busy week for the Prestonsburg natives, who will also be rubbing shoulders with folks in the days before and after with folks in Nashville during AMERICANAFEST.

Luke Trimble

When: Sept. 13 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Whirling Tiger — 1335 Story Ave, Louisville

Online: TheWhirlingTiger.com

Eastern Kentucky’s Luke Trimble, whose sense of place and love for where he comes from rivals the best of our region on tunes like “Headed Out The Holler” and “Bluegrass,” will perform at The Whirling Tiger in Louisville on Saturday.
